Celebrate Chinese Luxury This Lunar New Year with Peddlers Craft Gin

China is no stranger to luxury. Year after year, the Chinese luxury consumer market grows in leaps and bounds and is slated to become the largest in the world as early as 2025.

And while much of this growth has seen the biggest names in European and American luxury pivot to the expanding Chinese consumer base, it’s also given rise to a growing number of Chinese luxury producers.

Peddlers Gin Company is the epitome of this fast-emerging Chinese-grown type of luxury production. As China’s first craft gin distillery, Peddlers tells a story of cultural cross-pollination between East and West while honouring the traditions and uniqueness of its diverse and ancient homeland.

Keep scrolling for a closer look at how this innovative company is carving out its own space in the Chinese luxury market and welcoming in the Year of the Tiger with invention and style.

What is Peddlers Gin Company?

Peddlers Gin Company is the world’s first Shanghai-born gin distillery. A relative newcomer to the global craft gin scene, Peddlers takes inspiration from the high-energy hustle of its home in the world’s largest shipping hub.

Despite being a young brand, Peddlers has already won numerous accolades at international spirits and mixology competitions, being hailed as a refined and complex gin for the adventurous imbiber.

Peddlers Gin Varieties

A true example of cultural mixing, Peddlers Rare Shanghai Gin builds from the foundations of the British naval spirit with a range of East Asian botanicals, resulting in a perfectly balanced gin that is at once familiar and distinctive.

Macerated juniper berries form the fragrant and peppery heart of Peddlers — as with all gin. A litany of uniquely Chinese flavours is also captured in the still with the addition of Sichuan pepper and Chinese cassia bark to give the gin a distinctive, warm spice.

These warming flavours are perfectly contrasted with the light and floral sweetness of the Yunnan native citrus fruit, Buddha’s Hand as well as the delicate floral aftertaste of lotus flower. East Asian mint and cardamom offer a subtle undertone of cooling menthol, working to mellow the spices and bind all the flavours together.

A handful of other East Asian botanicals are included which bring this innovative and distinctive recipe together, forming the Peddlers flagship product, Rare Shanghai Gin.

Peddlers also produces a barrel-aged variety of gin with a resinous palate and amber tone. This gin is refined and rested in French oak barrels, once used for Napa Valley Pinot noir, resulting in a richer gin with caramel undertones and a bright stone fruit fragrance.

To round off this innovative company’s gin repertoire is Peddlers Salted Plum Gin. This contemporary Chinese take on traditional sloe gin incorporates salted plum, mulberry and orange peel into the Rare Shanghai Gin base to create a sweeter, lower-proof iteration of the spirit, perfect for mixing cocktails.

The Chinese Luxury Tiger

Like many other contemporary Chinese luxury goods companies, Peddlers approaches traditional European craft and production in a unique way that reflects China’s rich, diverse history, as well as its deep economic and cultural connections with the wider world.

With spices that once traversed the Silk Road, from Shanghai to Samarkand to Soho, connecting with crafts that sailed the world on pioneer and navy ships alike, Peddlers gin is truly a global product with international origins.

And with the beginning of the Year of the Tiger at hand, Peddlers is in the mood to celebrate its burgeoning success and pay homage to the fierce and courageous striped King of the Mountain and God of wealth that is the Tiger.

For a limited time this 2022 Lunar New Year, Peddlers is offering an additional Spirit of the Tiger ceramic cocktail mug free with the purchase of the Rare Shanghai Gin.
