If you’re not yet introduced to SkinCeuticals, please allow me to change your life.

Backed by science, SkinCeuticals is a skincare brand committed to improving the wellbeing of the skin. Given the cult-like following the brand has garnered, that project seems to be well underway. Founded in 1994, the brand focuses on 3 main pillars: prevent, protect, correct. According to the brand, “These principles work synergistically to provide the healthiest skin possible, and optimal anti-aging results.”

If you’re anything like me and need some proof to back up these grand claims, just look to the brand’s C E Ferulic serum. This serum, which combines vitamins C, E, and ferulic acid, works to simultaneously revive and protect the skin. And beauty gurus everywhere seem to agree that—yes—it actually works.

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Reviews

Knowing that a serum is well-formulated is all well and good, but knowing what people are actually saying about it is way more useful in my books.

To seek out some perspectives on the C E Ferulic serum, I’ve scoured the ‘net for useful reviews to help guide you in deciding whether or not to fork out for it.

“I love this serum! I received it as a sample and I truly love it. It sinks into the skin well, and works well under my products I wear for the day. I notice a difference in my skin when using this, my skin looks really healthy and glowy. Also, this doesn't break me out. If this wasn't so expensive I would buy this all the time and it would be the only vitamin c serum I would ever use.”

Lauren on Adore Beauty

“There's nothing I don't love about this product (price excluded). I don't even mind the smell! I do not have sensitive skin, but even I feel a slight tingle along my cheeks when I use this product. But to me, that means the product must be working! Great product, and will definitely be repurchasing.”

ALW on Adore Beauty

“After testing SkinCeuticals' C E Ferulic for three weeks, I am now fully obsessed with it. It completely transformed the texture of my skin while breathing new life into my dull and dry complexion. I’ll be savouring every last drop!”

Jenna Igneri, Byrdie

“I started seeing noticeable results after the first month, but now that I am over ninety days in I can confidently say that my skin has drastically improved. The tiny bumps along my cheeks and chin have completely levelled and now my skin is so good, I rarely wear foundation at all.”

Justine Carreon, Elle

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Price

Image: Adore Beauty

Like most great things in life, this seemingly magic serum comes a price — and a pretty steep one that that. At $218 for a 30ml bottle on Adore Beauty, it is undeniably more expensive than other serums on the market.

For the sake of comparison, Sunday Riley’s C.E.O. Glow Vitamin C Serum rings up at $128 from Mecca, and Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate is $108 for 50ml. However, it should be mentioned that neither of the alternatives contains either the vitamin E or Ferulic acid that makes SkinCeuticals’ serum so special.

Also, keep in mind that though it may sound like a lot for a small bottle, a little goes a long way. “In my opinion, it’s worth the price—it really delivers results.”Jenna Igneri, beauty editor at Byrdie writes. “Not only will it breathe new life into your skin, but the bottle will last you. Just pay attention to expiration dates and look out for any oxidation.”

What does SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic do?

By now, you’re probably starting to see that this serum is quite a fan-favourite—but what exactly does it do?

Vitamin C has long been touted to be one of the best components of any anti-ageing skincare routine. And, understanding this, SkinCeuticals has taken it one step further. “Research shows that specific combinations of antioxidants, when effectively formulated, perform synergistically to provide results superior to each single antioxidant formulation,” the brand states.

While vitamin C brightens and vitamin E protect the skin, “Ferulic acid, also an antioxidant, is the third and essential last piece of the puzzle. It supercharges the skin-brightening perks of vitamins C and E and slows down the ageing process, minimising the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage and even dark spots,” according to Gritty Pretty

Given this, the serum simultaneously supports and protects your skin, making for a superpower serum that achieves far more than any antioxidant would on its own. And to be honest, it does seem to make sense to combine all the benefits into one serum—it also helps to justify the price tag. In the brand’s typically scientific vein, SkinCeuticals ran studies to confirm the outcomes of the serum, proving the synergistic qualities it boasts: “C E Ferulic clinical studies show a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, improved skin firmness, and a brightened complexion.”

What Does SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Smell Like?

Among all the glowing reviews, one of the few downsides noted by reviewers is the smell. Strangely enough, those who complain about the smell often cite one common food for comparison: Hot Dogs.

In fact, there is an entire article on The Cut dedicated to understanding the source of the meaty smell. The medical director of SkinCeuticals even chimed in, telling The Cut, “The ‘hot dog’ scent cannot technically be pinpointed since it is a combination of the raw ingredients. Many attribute it to the addition [of] ferulic acid.” The article concluded that the hot dog smell may be more psychological than anything, but regardless of whether it’s all in our heads or not, it probably won’t smell as amazing as some of your other beauty products.

Not all reviewers are bothered by the smell either. “The smell so many have complained about isn't that strong & to me, smells like magic working on my skin. I have oil combination early 40's skin which gets ratty on occasion - this is not my staple product,” one reviewer, Donna, wrote at Adore Beauty. “It has a bit of a strange smell which once I got used to, I have now stopped noticing,” another reviewer, Roe, wrote. “This was my first Skinceuticals product and now I’m a devoted Skinceuticals girl!”

How Long Does Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Last

Given the fact that this serum is quite costly, it makes sense to ask exactly how long the little bottle will last. Despite only containing 30ml, each application only requires a few drops. This means that the entire bottle can last you a few months, making it an every-once-in-awhile investment.

However, it is important to make sure to keep an on the expiration date and look out for any oxidisation. “If the colour of your serum begins to turn darker (from clear/yellow to orange or dark brown), it’s most likely oxidized and less effective,” Byrdie reports. “Typically, L-ascorbic acid has about a three-month shelf life once the bottle is opened.”
