Book These Boat Rides Ahead of Time to See the Lights of Vivid in Style

Vivid is arguably the highlight of Sydney’s event calendar. The city lights up, tourists flock in, locals become explorers in their own city. We don’t even mind that it’s cold and all the best spots are outside.

Since the bulk of the light displays are held around the harbour—the MCA and the Opera House are consistent favourites—it’s the most popular place for Vivid viewing. The best way to experience Vivid sans crowds (an important consideration in 2021)? On a harbour cruise.

After last year’s cancellation, Vivid this year is set to be brighter than ever. Vivid 2021 runs from August 6 to 28, so now’s the time to start booking cruises and experiences. There are dozens to choose from, some with meals, drinks and even shows included, so here’s a round-up of just a few for your consideration.

Stunning Vivid Sydney Dinner Cruise

Sydney Showboats is running the Stunning Vivid Sydney Dinner Cruise ($105). This three-hour cruise includes a deluxe three-course dinner, prepared fresh on board, at a reserved table with full waiter service. While you dine, you can enjoy a one-hour cabaret show, Voyage of Love. Before dinner, stand out on the deck to get the best view of the lights in the city—and the most impressive Instagram grid. The cruise boards at King Street Wharf at 7 pm and returns at 10 pm. Guests are expected to stick to the smart-casual dress code.

Clearview Glass Boat Dinner Cruise

Australian Cruise Group will be hosting the Vivid Sydney Clearview Glass Boat Dinner Cruise ($115). This cruise also departs King Street Wharf at 7 pm for three hours of cruising the harbour. The fare includes a five-course degustation menu, and for an extra $33 you can add a beverage package for beer, wine and soft drink. The dress code is smart, with men requested to wear a collared shirt and long pants, and women asked to dress appropriately for a fine restaurant. The vessel itself is almost entirely glass, so you’re guaranteed panoramic views of the festival.

Spectacle Blueroom Late Cocktail Cruise

The same company runs a few other cruises, but we like the look of the Vivid Spectacle Blueroom Late Cocktail Cruise ($55). This is a shorter cruise at two hours, but without the sit-down dinner element. This means you’re free to roam the ship and can spend all your time snapping pictures. Included in your fare are a menu of fresh canapes and a selection of beer, wine and soft drinks. There's also an option to upgrade to a deluxe cheese platter for an extra $36. The dress code is “smart and elegant”, and men are suggested to bring dinner jackets. This cruise boards at 7.50 pm, but the Early Cocktail Cruise departs at 5:15 pm for the same price.

Vivid Gold Penfolds Dinner

Captain Cook Cruises—one of the official partners of Vivid Sydney—runs several cruises throughout the festival, but the one we’re most keen to be on board for is the Vivid Gold Penfolds Dinner (from $199). This cruise departs nightly at 5 pm and 7 pm and offers a six-course degustation fine dining experience with a gold selection of private bin vintage and bin wines from Penfolds paired with each course. There is also a selection of house spirits, liqueurs, beers and soft drinks. You’re guaranteed window seating on the cruise, so you can enjoy up-close views of the lights while taking in the live music on board. If you’re not much of a drinker, you can also do the same cruise without the beverage package (from $179).
